An IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN) is a 6-digit code the IRS assigns each year to keep someone else from filing a return in your name. Without it, fraudulent e-filings get much harder.
How to check yours
- Sign in to your account at irs.gov.
- Verify your identity with ID.me (it's free and finishes in a few minutes).
- From the main menu you'll see your current-year IP PIN.

Anyone can request an IP PIN — you don't have to be a victim of identity theft. It's free, extra security.
